ChatGPT card declined help

ChatGPT Card Declined? What each cause means and what to try next

Check these five things first

  • Card number, expiry date, CVC and billing address (with ZIP or postal code) are exactly right.
  • The card has funds and allows online and international payments.
  • You finished your bank's 3D Secure step without closing the checkout.
  • Both your location and your card's issuing bank are in a country OpenAI supports.
  • You have stopped retrying after several failures in a row.

Why the payment fails, and how to fix each cause

The causes below follow OpenAI’s Help Center. Almost every ChatGPT card declined case comes down to one of these five causes, so work through them in order.

1. Your bank refused the charge

This is the most common reason for a ChatGPT card declined message. Some banks block online or international charges by default, and OpenAI says it usually gets no detailed reason from the bank.

  • Call your bank or open its app and ask whether a charge from OpenAI was blocked.
  • Ask it to allow online, recurring and international payments on this card.

2. Card details or billing address do not match

One wrong CVC digit, an old expiry date or a billing address that differs from your bank's records is enough for a refusal.

  • Type the card details by hand instead of using autofill, and use the exact billing address your bank has.

3. 3D Secure verification did not finish

If your bank's code or app approval window is blocked or closed, you may see "authentication required" or "3D Secure attempt failed", and you end up with a ChatGPT card declined error on a card that is fine.

  • Allow pop-ups and redirects, pause ad or pop-up blockers, and clear the cache and cookies for chatgpt.com.
  • Try an incognito window, another browser, another device or another network.
  • Approve the bank prompt and wait; do not close or refresh the checkout.

4. Your location or card country is not supported

OpenAI only sells subscriptions in supported countries and regions, and the card must be issued by a bank in one of them. A ChatGPT card declined error can also appear when your location does not match your card's billing country.

  • Check OpenAI's supported countries list for both where you are and where your card was issued.
  • Pay from a stable network environment in the same country as your billing address.

5. You are using a prepaid or virtual card

OpenAI states that prepaid cards cannot buy API credits; only standard credit or debit cards work there. Users also report many ChatGPT card declined cases with prepaid and virtual cards on subscriptions.

  • Switch to a standard credit or debit card from a bank in a supported country.

Stop retrying after a few failures

Many users report that after several ChatGPT card declined errors in a row, every new try fails too, even with a card that works elsewhere. Sort out the cause with your bank first, then make one clean attempt.

ChatGPT Plus or Pro renewal payment failed

A failed renewal is a ChatGPT card declined problem on a card that used to work. OpenAI suggests these steps:

  1. Clear your browser cache and cookies, then retry.
  2. Ask your bank whether funds are short or a security check stopped the charge.
  3. Check the card details, billing address and expiry date in your ChatGPT billing settings.
  4. Make sure both you and your card issuer are in a supported country.
  5. Still failing? Contact OpenAI support through the Help Center chat.

"Payment was not approved" on a free trial

Unlike a ChatGPT card declined error, this message mostly appears when claiming a free Plus trial or another offer. OpenAI has no Help Center article on it. In OpenAI community threads, users report it with several payment methods, often before any bank screen appears, and OpenAI support asks them to open a support case.

Pause blocking extensions, make one attempt instead of cycling through cards, and if it continues, open a case with OpenAI support.

Tried everything and the card still fails?

If the ChatGPT card declined error will not go away, you can pay through GetPlus instead. We are a third-party top-up service, not affiliated with OpenAI. You pay with Alipay at our checkout (processed by Stripe), get an activation code, and use it with your account email to activate Plus or Pro on your own ChatGPT account. We never ask for your password.

Top-ups are usually done within 3–5 minutes, with a 30-day warranty and a full refund if the top-up fails.

ChatGPT card declined FAQ

Why does ChatGPT say "Your card has been declined" when my card works elsewhere?

Working on other sites does not mean your bank approves OpenAI. The bank may block international or recurring charges, the 3D Secure step may not have finished, or your card country may not be supported. Call the bank first.

How long should I wait after a ChatGPT card declined error?

OpenAI does not publish a waiting time. Many users report that rapid repeated attempts keep failing, so fix the cause with your bank, then try once.

What does "Payment was not approved" mean on a free trial?

The trial checkout did not accept the payment method. OpenAI has not published a specific cause; pause blocking extensions, try once, and open a case with OpenAI support if it continues.

Is there another way to get ChatGPT Plus if my card keeps failing?

Yes. Buy a Plus or Pro top-up from a third-party service such as GetPlus, pay with Alipay, and activate it on your own account with an activation code. Your card never goes through OpenAI's checkout in that flow.
